Sexual Harassment Training Classes:
Warn Against Sexual Harassment in the Office
Nowadays, sexual Harassment is a widely extended phenomenon in our offices and workplaces. It can be conceived as a form of abuse which consists of an intimidation or unwelcome proposal or molestation of a sexual nature which can generate a hostile environment for the victim who suffers it.
In most of the Countries all over the World, Sexual Harassment is considered as an illegal behavior, especially when it takes place on the workplace, which can deeply attempt against Fundamental Human Rights such as the Sexual Freedom, being included as a Felony in their Criminal Law Codes.
This form of sexual discrimination can affect people from all races and ages, and of both sexes. Indeed, the reported cases of homosexual harassment increase year after year. However, on a typical case the victim of this type of behavior is still a woman between her twenties and her forties, and the male harasser who perpetrates it is generally a Superior, using his position to attempt his objectives.
In a context of economical crisis, this problem is even deeper, as victims afraid to lose their jobs and having to face great difficulties in finding a new one could be more exposed against these abusive actions.
Which behaviors could be considered as forms of Sexual Harassment?
We cannot properly talk about a concrete number of actions or behaviors which could be considered as Sexual Harassment. Anything from a lascivious look or repetitive tasteless remarks to more explicit acts such as proposals or unwelcome molestations could indicate that you are being a victim of it.
Either way, except for the most evident cases, you should need to think through all the facts and elements of your situation, as sometimes the way people are is not black or white. For instance, imagine that one of your colleagues at Work is the typical funny guy who likes to tell tasteless, and sometimes sex related, jokes. In such a situation, in spite of his bad manners, it would be hard to talk about him as a sexual harasser.
However, if maybe that person had asked you out and you rejected him and after that he began flirting and making offensive comments of a sexual nature only when you both are alone and regardless of your negative reaction to them, or even if he tried to humiliate you in public, you definitely would be a victim of sexual harassment.
Obscene Glances as a form of Sexual Harassment
Obscene or lascivious glances are another form of sexual harassment. The problem is that it would be extremely hard to base a claim on what could be considered by other people as your own subjective perception.
However, they could serve you as a first warning sign. If you constantly caught your colleague or your Boss staring at you, you should act firmly against it. Not making yourself clear in that moment can make him or her believe that you are a weak or shy person, and that you will not try to defend yourself if he or she tried to go further.
Conclusions
Sexual Harassment can have terrible consequences not only for the victims who suffer it but also for the entire organization in which this phenomenon takes place, including the decrease in productivity and poor performance by their employees. Work environment would be clearly damaged as a consequence of it.
Besides, if the Management of the Company does not take an active role in preventing and fighting against it, it could entail other effects such as loss of respect and trust, and poor public image as probably Victims who do not find support within the organization could take their issues to Court.
